Have you just brought home a new puppy and are struggling to house train them? Here are 5 tips to potty train your puppy successfully:
Establish a Consistent Routine: Take your puppy outside at regular intervals, such as after meals, big drinks, naps, and playtime. This is when they will most likely need to go, so you can preempt it and take them out as soon as they finish eating, playing or napping. A predictable schedule also helps them understand when it's time to go.
Designate a Potty Spot: Take your puppy to the same outdoor area to encourage them to use it consistently. The familiar scent will help them associate the spot with bathroom breaks.
Use Positive Reinforcement: Immediately reward and praise your puppy when they go potty outside. You can even use a cue such as "go potty" and reward with a treat when they finish. This reinforces the behavior and helps them understand that going outside is a good thing.
Supervise Indoors: Keep a close eye on your puppy when they’re inside. If you notice signs that they need to go (sniffing, circling), take them outside right away. Crate training can also prevent accidents when you’re not able to supervise.
Stay Patient and Consistent: Potty training takes time, so be patient with your puppy. Consistency in your routine and expectations will help them learn more quickly. Remember, accidents are normal – just stay calm and keep reinforcing positive behaviors. understand when it's time to go.
